Materials:
- 1 lb. ground beef or turkey
- 1 onion chopped
- 2 garlic cloves minced
- 2 bell peppers chopped
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 28 oz. tomato sauce
- 10oz diced tomatoes & chilies
- 1 tbsp. sugar
- 1 tbsp. oregano
- 1 tsp basil
- 1/4 tsp (more if you like heat) red pepper flakes
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 package (12 rolls) sweet Hawaiian rolls
- 1 cup mild cheddar cheese
- 1 tbsp. olive oil
Process:
- In a soup pot or large skillet add in the olive oil.
- Keeping the heat on medium high add in the ground beef/ turkey. Season with salt and pepper and cook breaking the meat apart with a wooden spoon.
- Once fully cooked through remove the meat with a slotted spoon. If your meat renders a lot of fat discard some of the fat before continuing.
- Add in the onion and pepper and cook until the onion is fully cooked through, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add in the garlic and cook until fragrant.
- Add the ground meat back into the pot along with the tomato paste.
- Mix well to incorporate fully.
- Add in the diced tomatoes and chilies as well as the can of tomato sauce. Mix well.
- Season with sugar, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Mix well to incorporate.
- Lower the heat to a simmer, cover and cook for 40-45 minutes stirring every 5-10 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 380 degrees F and line a baking sheet with some parchment paper.
- Place the bottom half of the Hawaiian rolls on the baking sheet.
- Top with a layer of your simmered meat and a sprinkle of cheddar cheese.
- Cover the top with the top half of the rolls and bake for 5-6 minutes, until the cheese is melted.
- Plate and ENJOY!
