Apple Cinnamon Rolls

Prep time: 20 minutes

Cook time: 25-35 minutes

Rest time: 3-4 hours

Dough Materials:

  • 2 3/4 cups flour (additional needed to for rolling out/ kneading by hand)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup whole milk warmed
  • 3 tbsp. unsalted butter melted
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract

Filling Materials:

  • 5 medium apples cubed
  • 3 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp. cinnamon

Glaze & Other Materials:

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tbsp. heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp. cinnamon
  • 4 tbsp. unsalted butter softened at room temperature

Process:

  1. In a small mixing bowl or measuring cup warm your whole milk. Add in the unsalted butter and mix to combine.
  2. Add in the instant yeast and mix gently to incorporate. Set aside 8-10 minutes to allow the yeast to bloom.
  3. In the bowl of a standing mixer add in the flour, sugar, salt, yeast mixture, egg and vanilla extract.
  4. Knead on low speed for 8-10 minutes.
  5. Remove dough and place on a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough by hand into a ball.
  6. Place the dough into a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and place in a dark warm place for 60-90 minutes or until doubled in size.
  7. In the meantime add your cubed apples to a skillet with high sides or medium sized sauce pan. Add in 3 tbsp. unsalted butter, 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tbsp. cinnamon. Cook over medium/ high heat for 8-10 minutes (stirring often), until the apples have softened.
  8. Set aside to cool.
  9. In a small bowl combine the additional 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tbsp. cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.
  10. Once the dough has risen lightly flour a clean work surface. Place the dough on the work surface and roll out to a rectangular (about 14 in x 10 in).
  11. Spread the remaining tbsp. of softened butter over the dough and then sprinkle with the reserved sugar and cinnamon mix.
  12. Top with the cooled apple mixture
  13. Cut diagonally into 8 equal strips.
  14. Roll the strips into pin wheels (watch video for visual) and place into a greased rectangular baking pan.
  15. Cover and let rise again for 60-90 minutes.
  16. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and cool for 20-25 minutes.
  17. In a small mixing bowl combine 1/2 cup powered sugar and 1-2 tbsp. heavy cream. Mix well.
  18. Drizzle the glaze over the baked cinnamon rolls, plate and ENJOY!
